Franny’s Bistro in Camden
Franny’s Bistro in Camden opened in 2018, but its roots in the Midcoast food community run deep. Co-owners Jennifer and Jack Neal bring decades of experience and a shared commitment to thoughtful hospitality and delicious food.
Franny’s is known for its warm service in a space that’s equal parts cozy, eclectic, and refined. The decor leans Victorian, with patterned rugs, velvet curtains, and layers of artwork. Jennifer describes it as a place that feels like home—if home had better lighting and a killer wine list. “We put a lot of thought into every single thing in here,” she says.
Jack’s food is often described as American bistro with global influences. Signature dishes include scallops with bacon and creamed corn, creamy mussels sourced from Pemaquid and Mount Desert Island, and shrimp and grits praised by Southerners as among the best they’ve had. The menu also features Portuguese seafood stew and Asian-influenced ribs. While Jennifer and Jack may debate what dish they’re most famous for, the consensus from customers tends to lean toward the scallops and mussels.
The drinks menu includes thoughtfully selected wines and a growing non-alcoholic cocktail list. Jennifer is especially excited about expanding those options. “There are so many choices now,” she says. “I like going out and having something interesting to drink, whether it has alcohol or not.”
In the summer, tables are booked weeks in advance, with regulars returning year after year. “We see people from Vermont three times a year,” Jennifer says. “They make reservations in April because they don’t want to miss us.” Despite the popularity, the Neals aim to keep Franny’s personal and grounded. “Eating here is not a one-time deal,” Jennifer says. “We’re a place people love coming back to.”
